BHP, Agrocultural Program for the Desert Area

To promote a social and economic sustainable development in the northern area through a professional support net and foster the entrepreneurship of the communities, Fundación Chile has been working since 2011 in the program of Agrocultural Development of the Cerro Colorado Mining.

The program is developed in three cities of the Tarapacá Region, to the east of Iquique: Mamiña, Quipisca and Parca. This communities are directly related to the activity of the Cerro Colorado Mining, for this reason, the Community Management of the company (within its HSEC system) is responsible for the coordination of the program.

The objectives and results of the program are to promote a social and economic sustainable development in the area; to foster the entrepreneurship of the communities; to improve the life quality of the families, encouraging them to continue living in that cities; to increase the productivity and improve the family incomes that nowadays are only subsistence economy; and to generate an added value to the developed products.
