Development of technologies of packaging to improve the useful life of export blueberries

Fundación Chile awarded the project funding by INNOVA. The project seeks to develop new packaging for the export of fresh blueberries. The objective of this project is to improve the arrival condition of the blueberry to international markets, considering the sustainability through the implementation of Ecodesign methodologies. Similarly, innovative technologies associated with active packaging and modified atmosphere will be tested to improve the fruit condition. The packaging will solve the firmness, dehydration and rot problems. Furthermore, this solution will allow potentiating the diversification of shipments to European and Asian markets, avoiding the high concentration in U.S.

The project is led by Fundación Chile with the technical support of the Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María. Three blueberry exporters are also involved: a service company about modified atmosphere for food and a company that manufactures packaging for the fresh fruit export. Fundación Chile will provide the consultancy through International Technological Centers of global excellence for the implementation of vanguard technologies for active packaging and modified atmosphere.
